The St. Louis Rams made history during the seventh round of the NFL draft by selecting the NFL’s first openly gay player, Michael Sam. ESPN in particular had the best coverage of the selection as they caught Sam’s raw emotion as he broke down crying when he received the phone call. Sam then proceeded to kiss his boyfriend on live television to cement the moment in history.
The coverage was handled exquisitely be ESPN and they should be applauded for their daring attempt to share the moment with the world. However, some people found their way to Twitter and share their not so subtle opinions. Among the hate and trash of many of Twitter’s faithful users, former Ole Miss guard Marshall Henderson decided to make a fool of himself.
Henderson started off his rant with a a tweet that is as follows:
"Boycotting sportscenter til this michael sam nasty a** s*** is off .... My brothers are 7 and 11 and saw that!!! #SICKENING."
After some negative backlash from the Twitetr faithful, Henderson "revealed" it was a twisted social experiment.
Henderson is not expected to be drafted in June's NBA draft and this is just the icing on the cake. Sam is going to face many days like this throughout his NFL career, but does a few hateful rants takeaway from the incredible support he received in the past few months? Michael Sam is a Ram and now it's time for him to get to work.
