The Buffalo Bills have traded their former number one receiver Stevie Johnson to the San Francisco 49ers for a conditional fourth round pick according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
With the Bills drafting Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins, something had to give in Buffalo and Johnson was easily the odd man out. The Bills have a promising young receiver in Robert Woods and recently traded for the serviceable Mike Williams.
If EJ Manuel can stay healthy in 2014, the Bills have supplied him with enough weapons where he should make a huge second year jump. The Bills got back the pick they traded away to the Browns for Watkins thus making the big first round trade simply Watkins for the Bills 2015 first round pick.
The 49ers, on the other hand, get a very good receiver in Johnson, who has been one of the pleasant surprises to come out of Buffalo in recent seasons. The 49ers have answered the question about what they plan to do at the wide receiver position with this addition. In the end it wasn't a big splash in the draft, but trading away one of their many picks to grab an established veteran like Johnson.
This trade is a rare one that works out for both sides considering where they are heading at this juncture of the season. The Bills had too many receivers and the 49ers had too many draft picks. The Bills opened up some room at wide receiver while regaining a pick they needed and the the 49ers got the wide receiver they have been hoping for all along.
