Police maintain the 24-year-old Hernandez orchestrated the killing after the former NFL star became angry over Lloyd talking with other people Hernandez considered his enemies, and his growing concern about Lloyd's knowledge of other violent crimes the former NFL star is alleged to have been involved in. Just days before Lloyd's June 17, 2013 slaying, police add the two men bickered at a Boston nightclub.

On the night of the killing, investigators insist the former New England Patriots tight end summoned both Ortiz and Wallace to accompany him as he picked up Lloyd in nearby Dorchester. Video surveillance since retrieved by police of that night later shows the three men leaving an industrial park where Lloyd's bullet-riddled body was later found.

Hernandez is also at the center of an ongoing, unsolved investigation where two men were killed in a 2012 drive-by shooting in downtown Boston.
