New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira will miss 8-10 weeks due to an injured right wrist, according to Yankees manager Joe Girardi on Wednesday. Teixeira suffered the injury on Tuesday while participating in for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic.

The Yankees initially estimated Teixeira would miss just two weeks. But Wednesday's update indicates that Teixeira will miss the entire month of April and could possibly be out of the lineup until mid-May.

Teixeira strained his right wrist while swinging off a tee Tuesday, shortly before the U.S. tied 4-4 with the Chicago White Sox in an exhibition game. X-rays were negative and an MRI exam revelaed a strain on the outside of Teixeira's right forearm, near his wrist.

The slugger flew to New York and was evaluated further Wednesday by Yankees team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad and hand specialist Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser.

Last season, Teixeira hit .251, with 24 home runs and 84 RBIs. Teixeira is a career .279 hitter with 338 home runs and 1,101 RBIs. Teixeira is a 3-time silver slugger award winner and a 5-time gold glove winner, with the most recent coming last season.
