In a flick of the wrist, Novak Djokovic may be out of the French Open. And beyond.

Novak Djokovic to become a father

ESPN reported Sunday that Djokovic, the world's No. 2 men's tennis player, has withdrawn from this week's Madrid Open because of a recurrence of a right wrist injury that hampered him during his semifinals loss to Roger Federer at the Monte Carlo Tennis Masters last month.

"I am very sorry for the Madrid tournament and all the Spanish fans to have to pull out of the Mutua Madrid Open," said Djokovic told the official ATP Tour website Sunday. "I did everything possible in order to play in Madrid, which is one of the biggest events of the year, but unfortunately my right arm injury has flared up again.

"Now I will take some time to recover and heal my injury, hoping I will be ready for Rome. I look forward to returning to Madrid next year."

Novak Djokovic's wrist injury not considered serious

After the Monte Carlo tournament, Nole said he thought he would have to take an extended absence to rest his wrist to be able to play in the Grand Slam events at Roland Garros and at Wimbledon.

But after having the wrist examined by physicians, Djokovic announced he could continue to play while rehabbing the wrist.

"Fortunately, the situation with the injury is better than it first seemed," Djokovic was quoted as saying in a release through the ATP. ''Doctors assured me that I will be ready for Madrid, then Rome and Roland Garros, just as it has been planned. However, I need to continue with the recovery process and full medical treatments. It means I will have to take a short break in order to recover as soon as possible."

Djokovic was hoping to play in Madrid and Rome to gather some momentum heading into the French Open on May 25.

ESPN reported that Djokovic still plans on playing in next week's Rome Open, but with the wrist now a possibility to flare up at any time, Djokovic's summer may be over before it even starts.
