Tonight at 8:10 p.m. ET the Los Angeles Dodgers (14-12) and Minnesota Twins (12-11) will kick off a three-game set that was supposed to begin Tuesday night, but had to be postponed due to rain. Unbeaten Zack Greinke (4-0, 2.35 ERA) will toe the rubber for L.A., while Kyle Gibson (3-1, 3.63 ERA) will get the stat for the Twins.
Greinke comes into tonight's matchup with MLB's highest-scoring offense staring him down. The Twins have been surprisingly potent at the dish, averaging 5.52 runs per game, with MLB's top on-base percentage (.353).
That likely won't worry Greinke, currently the Dodgers' ace with Clayton Kershaw on the disabled list. Greinke's pitched five-plus innings and allowed two runs or fewer in 20 straight outings. "What I really try to do is try not to have a bad game, and it's been working for a while," Greinke said, making it sound easy.
The key to taming the Twins' lineup will be control for Greinke, as Minnesota has drawn the second most walks in all of baseball (121). "I think everybody is just trying to get on base, and there's always conversation about it," manager Ron Gardenhire said.
"A lot of our hitters have a few more at-bats in this league and understand it a bit more. It's experience and not panicking in certain situations."
They are also chomping at the bit to get back on the field after having their series finale with the Tigers rained out prior to last night's opener. "They feel like they haven't been out there in a year, and it's only been a few days," Gardenhire said, adding: "Mother Nature's winning right now."
