Effective immediately NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has declared that Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling will be banned for life from the NBA and fined $2.5 million. This marks an unprecedented suspension in light of Donald Sterling’s racist comments the NBA confirmed were in fact Mr. Sterling’s.
This ruling by Adam Silver will go down in history as a turning point of the NBA as they now attempt to “force” Sterling to sell the Clippers as soon as possible. Silver made it clear that that the NBA bylaws permit a forced sale that can occur when 75 percent of the owners vote toward a forced sale.
Silver mentioned he did not poll all the NBA owners, but he believes that when it does come to a vote, the owners will pass it with no problems.
The ruling was met with mixed reviews among fans, media and officials on Twitter.
The ruling by Adam Silver has had plenty of support from the media and public figures. ESPN’s Chris Broussard spoke the the Clippers and although nothing was aid publicly he added
“Clipper player tells me "everyone on team is very happy" with Silver's decision. They didn't watch press conference together. They were practicing”
Sacra
Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson made a statement about commissioner Silver and paid him one of the best compliments a commissioner could get.
"Adam Silver is not only the owner's commissioner, he's the player's commissioner,"
The NAACP has also released a statement in light of the leagues ruling.
"The NAACP is pleased the NBA is taking swift and strong action against Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling for his racist and offensive remarks," the statement said. "Their decision to ban Mr. Sterling indefinitely from the league, seek his removal from ownership and fine him $2.5 million -- the maximum amount under NBA rules -- is both welcomed and supported.
Although Sterling is out as Clippers’ owner, the team released a statement as well.
“We wholeheartedly support and embrace the decision by the NBA and...Adam Silver today. Now the healing process begins.”
Last, but certianly not least, Magic Johnson tweeted how he felt about the ruling. He could also become the teams owner in the future.
