According to ESPN, Kerr’s decision to not make the move until after the first round of the playoffs has to do with his current job at TNT.

Sources told ESPN.com on Tuesday that the intention of new Knicks president Phil Jackson is try to secure Kerr as his first coaching hire by early next month, which would theoretically soften the blow for the announcer's current employer to withstand losing its No. 1 analyst in the midst of the playoffs.

Kerr has been the favorite for the Knicks coaching job since Phil Jackson got into office and with the firing of Mike Woodson, it seemed inevitable the Knicks would make a move on him. Jackson is familiar with Kerr from their time together in Chicago when Jackson coached Kerr.

Other rumored coaches to be in contention for the Knocks job should Kerr not be signed include Derek Fisher and Brian Shaw. At the end of the day it looks like the Knicks have found their man and it just so happened to be the guy who was favored for the job all along.
