Teammates of former NFL star Darren Sharper remain dumbfounded by the rape charges he now faces and the ongoing investigation against him that could land him behind bars for the rest of life.

The 38-year-old Sharper has been charged with drugging and sexually assaulting as many as nine different women in five different states. He remains jailed in L.A. without bail, where he has now been held for nearly three months.

"This guy was like the chivalry days where you'd lay down a jacket so they could walk over the puddle," LeRoy Butler, who played with Sharper in Green Bay and describes him as one of his best friends, told NOLA.com. "Girls would throw themselves at him. He has no problem getting women at all. Good-looking guy. Great player. Possible Hall of Famer. He had lots of money. He had great parents - fantastic parents. This was a guy nobody would expect this kind of stuff from."

In all, the five time Pro Bowler played 14 NFL seasons, leading the New Orleans Saints to the franchise's only Super Bowl win in 2010.

"Either way, this is going to go down as one of the worst things in NFL history," added Tyrone Williams, another of Sharper's former Green Bay teammates. "I can't think of anything to this magnitude. I never, ever could have imagined seeing what has allegedly happened with Darren Sharper. I never would have seen this coming."
