Jozy Altidore set the record for most goals by an American born player in a European League club season, scoring his 24th goal for Az Alkmaar in the team's 2-1 loss to RKC Waalwijk in the Dutch Eridivisie on Sunday. Altidore breaks the previous record for an American set by Clint Dempsey.

The 23-year-old scored in the 69th minute of play, chipping in a left-footed shot from about 12 yards out passed goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet. Altidore currently has 17 league goals along with seven Dutch Cup goals this season. Waalwijk broke the tie in the 76th minute of play as Mart Lieder connected for his second goal of the game for the host team.

Dempsey's previous record was set while playing for Fulham last season. While at Fulham, the American scored 23 goals, including 17 in the English Premier League, three in the FA Cup and three in the Europa League before transferring to Tottenham in August.
