The Jets and veteran quarterback David Garrard are closing in on a deal, a source close to the situation told ESPN's Adam Schefter. "Both sides are feeling good about a possible deal," the source said.

Garrard served as a starter with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2006-2010, before being released after the team drafted Blaine Gabbart in the 2011 NFL Draft. Garrard opted to have surgery leading into the 2011 offseason in preparation for the 2012 season, however, was sidelined during training camp while competiting for the Miami Dolphins.

Garrard anticipates putting a deal together with the Jets once the team can work out salary-cap issues. The Jets have created $30.7 million in cap relief since releasing Bart Scott, Calvin Pace, Eric Smith, and Jason Smith. The team is still roughly $8 million under the cap.

The Jets are expected to bring in competition to compete with Mark Sanchez for the starting position. New York also has Tim Tebow, Greg McElroy, and Matt Simms on the roster.
