Woodson was notified in a meeting with Phil Jackson that he would not be retained for the 2014 season and that the team would be looking in a new direction. ESPN’s Chris Broussard reported the firing and believes had the Knicks made the playoffs and topped the Indiana Pacers, Woodson could have saved his job for another year.

The shortlist for the Knicks head coaching position includes Derek Fisher, Brian Shaw and Steve Kerr. Kerr is considered the favorite and the “perfect fit” to learn under Phil Jackson and become his protege to an extent.

Regardless of who the Knicks sign as the teams next coach, the shadow of Phil Jackson is not going anywhere anytime soon. Many people around the league think it is a matter of when and not if Jackson returns to the bench to coach these Knicks. Former coach Avery Johnson went on Mike & Mike Monday morning and said he would be “shocked” if Phil wasn't the coach in New York within the next two seasons.

Pacers On The Verge Of Historic Collapse

The Knicks have many questions to answer this offseason aside from who coaches the team. The team is strapped for cap space until 2015 and have to attempt and keep Carmelo Anthony in town. Whoever does end up coaching the Knicks, they will have their work cut out for them.
