Adrien Broner's loss to Marcos Maidana in December 2013 was surprising to many who have followed his meteoric rise through the boxing ranks, but "The Problem" will be back in action on May 3 and is telling his fans to have no fear.
Broner brags about his paycheck even after Maidana loss
"I had minor set back, but I am back on May 3. Everybody needs to understand that I just took a loss," Broner said before reverting to his brash persona that led to outright glee from fans the night Maidana floored him twice. "I haven't lost it. I'm still 'The Problem,' and anyone can get it, whether you are African, Puerto Rican, Dominican, Cuban or Mexican."
His opponent, Carlos Molina, is hoping to follow Maidana's blueprint when he steps in the ring with Broner who will be a heavy favorite once again after dropping down from welterweight. "Sure he's tough but we all saw what happened in his last fight when he was under pressure. I have the boxing ability and punching power to beat him and that is exactly what I plan to do on May 3," Molina said.
Amir Khan refused to face Broner on Mayweather undercard?
While Molina may try to pressure Broner, he doesn't have the power Maidana did. Of his 17 wins, only seven were via knockout, and the last time he stopped an opponent was in January of 2010. It's more likely this is a basic "get-right" fight for a budding superstar in need of image repair.
In the past against overmatched opponents, Broner has looked downright spectacular. Showtime may be hoping he does on May 3, so they can set up a fight with Danny Garcia down the line. Garcia hinted at a move up to welterweight since he struggled to make 140 lbs. vs. Mauricio Herrera, but he can match up with Broner at either class.
Broner may not have been ready to move up to 147 lbs. when he did, but a matchup at that weight with Danny could be to his advantage since "Swift" has never fought as a welterweight.
Garcia's name hasn't become a major draw yet, despite his entertaining fights, impressive collection of wins, and willingness to fight anyone. Facing a big name like Broner could be his ticket to becoming a PPV draw, especially since he underwhelmed in Puerto Rico against Herrera.
