Breaking up is hard to do, but it's not as hard via email.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Monday that five-star quarterback recruit Ricky Town, a product of Ventura, Calif., who is in the class of 2015, broke his silence about switching his commitment from Alabama to USC.
While dispelling the rumor that Lane Kiffin's move from USC to Alabama did not have an impact on Town's decision, he revealed a more interesting tidbit on how he told Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban about his change of heart.
"I sent Coach Saban an email and said 'Thank you for everything, but I have to do what's best for me,'" Ricky told the Journal-Constitution. "I never heard back from Coach Saban. But one of the girls that works in his office, she wrote back and said 'Best of luck.'"
The nerve of Saban not emailing back himself when Town apparently selected the third bravest method of informing Saban - behind the in-person or on-the-phone methods.
The equally intriguing aspect of Town's choice of a "Dear Nick" e-letter was the report's explanation that the Town family made it a "priority" to inform Alabama before going public with the commitment switch.
"It wasn't easy, for sure," Ricky's father Rick Sr., told the Journal-Constitution. "Coach Saban is not a guy you can get directly in contact with. But I made sure, and Ricky knew he had to let them know early in the morning if he was going to do something later that day. Obviously, I have a ton of respect for Coach Saban. And with meeting him, he was nothing but respectful toward us. He really showed us that he had a lot of interest. So to break away from that, it wasn't easy by any stretch of the imagination. But USC has obviously made that transition a lot easier since then."
And that respect no doubt came across in the email. The hardest part may have been to locate the spellcheck tab on Ricky's email account.
Hopefully for Alabama fans, Saban can somehow manage to find another quarterback willing to take a chance on the Crimson Tide.
