The Jacksonville Jaguars will be selecting No. 3 overall in the upcoming NFL Draft and they currently stand as one of the worst teams at the quarterback position. Recent rumors have the Jaguars passing on the likes of Blake Bortles and Teddy Bridgewater in favor of Jimmy Garoppolo in the second round.
Since the Jaguars entered the league as an expansion team in 1995 they haven’t been the most reliable team for quarterback talent. They signed Mark Brunell in 1995 and he currently stands as the franchises all-time best signal caller by far, but after him the names fall off greatly. David Garrard, Byron Leftwich and Blaine Gabbert were all given the keys to the franchise at one point and all haven’t lived up to their hype.
Now the Jaguars find themselves in the market for another franchise signal caller and if I were their fan base I would not be excited about this recent Garoppolo news. I, along with many other evaluators, love Garoppolo’s potential and rise during the draft process, but for the Jaguars to make the move and “settle” for quarterback for lesser value seems lazy and inconsiderate.
Texans Reportedly "Love" Tom Savage, Aaron Murray
If Garoppolo does end up in Jacksonville and does his best Tony Romo impression coming out of Eastern Illinois than the Jaguar front office will look like geniuses. Not only will they have filled a major weakness, but they will have done it a round later than they are projected to do it. Like with many head coaches and general managers, the quarterback you decide to hand the keys can make or break your job. As great as Gus Bradley has been for Jacksonville at this point, he lives and dies by how Jimmy Garoppolo compares to the potential five other quarterbacks he will bypassing on.
