San Francisco 49ers outside linebacker Aldon Smith was arrested Sunday for allegedly reporting a fake bomb threat. The incident was caught on video and is punishable by one year in prison.
Smith has had many a run in with the law and this is just the latest incident for a player that was already on thin ice with the 49ers management. Smith took a leave of absence for San Francisco after he was arrested for a DUI and marijuana possession and was charged later in the year with three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon.
As the legal process begins again for Smith, where does this leave the 49ers? Smith is an incredible player who averages 1.75 sacks a game in which he starts and is one of the brighter young stars in the NFL. Smith would likely be suspended by the NFL as a repeat offender, but that is only if he avoids jail time.
The 49ers have multiple second and third round picks so they would have to make a trade within the draft, but now they have cause to jump up into the top 15. A player like Anthony Barr, Dee Ford or Koly Ealy could step in and hope to preform up to Smith’s standards, but the shoes he would be leaving behind would be massive. What will the 49ers do and can they possibly replace Smith’s production?
