The 2013 NFL Draft was seen as incredibly thin at many skilled positions, but former general manager Charley Casserly set the record straight as to how bad last year's class was. Casserly said if he were to combine the two quarterback classes, last year's first selection EJ Manuel would be the eighth-best in 2014.

Casserly identified seven other quarterbacks he would have selected ahead of Manuel and aid this year is a much deeper class for signal callers, clearly. Tim Graham of the Buffalo News with the quote.

“I’ve got a lot of guys rated ahead of him based on their college career and based on Manuel’s college career. Bridgewater, Bortles, Manziel, Carr, Garoppolo and McCarron. I’ve got them all rated ahead of EJ Manuel, coming out a year ago. And you know what? LSU quarterback Mettenberger. I’ve got him ahead of Manuel, too.”

Thats a bold claim by Casserly, but considering how the class was a mystery up until draft day to many it isn't so farfetched that top of the 2014 class are far and wide better. Many have pointed out that Casserly doesn't have the best track record for selecting quarterbacks as he selected David Carr with the first overall pick in 2002. A few hiccups does not a bad General Manager make, but that blemish will always be associated with Casserly from his time in Houston.

Lions Looking To Trade Into The Top Five

Many other evaluators have said that this years crop of young quarterbacks are a “crapshoot” and only time will tell how they will pan out. Scouting only goes far and with any good selection a certain amount of luck has to go into it. Only real way to know who is right is to look back 5-10 years from now and see where these eight are in the football world.
