Today, April 7, 2014, will mark a bittersweet day in New York Yankees history. Derek Jeter will play in his final home opener at 1:05 p.m. ET in a game against the Baltimore Orioles (2-4) that can be live streamed by clicking this link. Fans who want to listen to the radio broadcast of Jeter's last opening hurrah may do so on 101.9 WFAN FM, while O's fans can do the same on 1090 WBAL. Hiroki Kuroda (0-1, 3.00 ERA) will be on the mound for the Yanks against Ubaldo Jimenez (0-1, 6.00 ERA).
The "Core Four" will re-unite for this historic day in Yankees history, while manager Joe Girardi acknowledged that today will be special. "There's always something special about Opening Day," Girardi said. "To know that it's your last one, I think it will mean a lot."
Even Jeter, who is generally stoic and unsentimental about personal accomplishments, said that this opener will mean a great deal to him. "It almost doesn't feel like the season is underway until you get to your home opener," Jeter said. "Especially missing last year, I'm looking forward to this one."
So far Jeter's looked healthy in 2014, moving well on the bases and in the field, where he's been a slight positive according to Fangraphs.com. His batting average is at a meager .190 right now though, and he has five strikeouts to four walks, so he'll be looking to get into the groove he had in 2012 when he batted .316.
The Yankees took two out of three in their last series against the Blue Jays, and will try to get Kuroda his first win of the year after a hard-luck loss in his first outing. He faces Jimenez, Baltimore's big free agent get this offseason who showed some of the warts that lengthened his stay on the free agency market.
