Tonight at 8:49 p.m. ET the No. 8 Kentucky Wildcats, favorites to be in this spot at the beginning of the season but certainly facing tall odds as it began, will try to make it to the Finals against the No. 2 seed Wisconsin Badgers at AT&T Stadium in Dallas. Kentucky fans can listen to the game on WKYM 101.7 FM, while Badgers fans can catch the radio broadcast on WIBA 1310.
While much of the focus is on Kentucky and their starry crew of underclassmen, the Badgers have quietly taken out top competition at every turn. They aren't particularly flashy, but head coach Bo Ryan quoted a famous musician to describe his style.
"Frank Sinatra, wasn't that the song? We did it our way?" Ryan said. "Everybody's doing it their way. If you're a coach and here's the landscape, you do it the best way you can."
Kentucky's way is more obvious-amass a collection of elite talent and hope it gels quickly. While many of the players on this team are playing at max two more collegiate games, coach John Calipari has them focused on the here and now.
"It's the elephant in the room that we don't need to talk about," he said.
There's a force in the middle for the Wildcats who is as unstoppable as an elephant at times-freshman forward Julius Randle. He averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds for the season, and in this Tournament has been a man among boys. He has registered a double-double in four straight tournament games, and made 50 percent or better from the field in three of the four games.
He'll be matched up against seven-footer Frank Kaminsky, the Badgers' leading scorer at just over 13 points per game. "Sometimes, we kind of fail the eye test," Kaminsky said of sneaking under the radar. "I know that, me, personally, I've heard comments about how I look like I'm asleep all the time. I don't know where that came from."
