Creighton senior Doug McDermott has won the John R. Wooden Award as player of the year, as announced on ESPN's SportsCenter on Friday.

He becomes the 38th winner of the Wooden Award and is the first college senior to cop the recognition since Jimmer Fredette in 2011. He beat out other highly touted players like Cleanthony Early of Wichita State, Jabari Parker of Duke and Russ Smith of Louisville to win the highly coveted award.

The high-scoring forward led his team to the NCAA tournament for the third straight year while breaking the 3,000 point mark this season. He was the best scorer this season with an average of 26.7 points a game, shooting 52 percent from the field and an amazing 44.9 percent from the three-point area.

McDermott also averaged 7 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game, leading his squad to 26 wins in the regular season in its first appearance in the Big East after leaving the Missouri Valley Conference.

The Wooden Award comes in the heels of other accomplishments for McDermott. He was also awarded the Oscar Robertson trophy on Thursday, earned first-team All-American selection and was the Player of the Year by the Associated Press and the Big East.

While Creighton was ambushed by number 6 seed Baylor in the third round of the NCAA tournament, McDermott has completed one of the best careers in NCAA basketball history. He is expected to become a lottery pick in this year's NBA draft. According to Bleacher Report: " It isn't known where McDermott will come off the board, but it is clear that the team that selects him will be getting a transcendent scorer who just finished one of the best college careers of all time."
