Of the dozens and dozens of attempted April Fool’s jokes Tuesday one stood above all the rest. The Colorado Rapids showed off their amazing “throwback” uniforms and it did not disappoint.
Bravo, Rapids. Not only did you not make a terrible attempt at an April Fools joke, but what you did parade out to the world is genuinely funny. According to the official press release by the Rapids, they were to wear the 1978 throwback uniforms in a future game, but would not reveal which game. 1978 is the only year the Rapids wore the uniform, but luckily for us they were gone and not forgotten.
The Colorado Rapids announced on Tuesday that the team will wear the official Caribous of Colorado uniforms, last seen during NASL games in 1978, at a future match (date to be determined). The jerseys, which had been thought to be lost, were recently uncovered and will once again see game action.
Rapids midfielder Brian Mullen, who was raised in Aurora, Colorado, also spoke on the great honor that would come with wearing the soccer cowboy look and to honor the men who wore it before him.
“I was born in April of 1978, so I remember the first Caribous match I went to with my family that same August like it was yesterday. It is a true honor to emulate those pioneers of American soccer – whose jerseys emulated the pioneers of the early American west – by wearing this uniform.”
Needless to say the team will not where these uniforms anytime soon, but a little part of me is upset that these priceless uniforms wont be seeing the light of day anytime soon.
