Ray Rice has married the woman he is accused of assaulting in an attack that left her slumped and laying unconscious in a hotel elevator after allegedly being slugged by the Baltimore Ravens star running back.

One day after he was indicted on a third-degree aggravated assault charge, ESPN reports Rice and Janay Palmer wed wed Friday night in a ceremony they had been planning for a "couple weeks."

Ray Rice to remain a Baltimore Raven

The union comes roughly six-weeks after Rice was originally charged with domestic-violence stemming from the incident. Both Rice and Palmer were initially charged with assault-domestic violence against one another..

But since he's now been indicted of far more serious charges, some are speculating the veteran NFL star may have been motivated to wed Palmer to take advantage of certain laws that safeguard one spouse from being testified against by another.

Ray Rice, fiancee to attend couple's counseling

Rice could face three to five years in prison if convicted on the more serious charges, even though his attorneys contended on the day the indictment was announced that neither party wanted to proceed with the case.

"We deny Ray Rice committed aggravated assault," said lead attorney Michael Diamondstein. "Neither Ray nor his fiancée wish to prosecute the matter. Ray and Janay are together. They're happy, and they're in counseling. We believe that as a matter of law that Ray Rice did not commit aggravated assault. We ask only that the public reserve judgment until all the facts come to light."
