On the same day where Miguel Cabrera signed his 10-year $292 million deal, Mike Trout signed an extension of his own with the Angels. Mike Trout will be an Angel for the price of $144.5 million over six years.
American League West Preview and Predictions
Trout signing his extension is a surprise to many due to the fact that he is the next big thing in baseball. Trout has two straight AL MVP runner-ups and they were in his first two seasons in the majors. Trout was expected to sign a deal that would eclipse or surpass the deal Cabrera signed earlier Friday, but it looks like Trout took a discount.
Should Miguel Cabrera's deal spark an MLB salary cap?
Mike Trout's $144.5 million contract is the 2nd-largest for any player with less than 3 yrs of service time (Posey, $164M)

At 24-years-old this is most likely not Trout’s last large contract of his career, but it comes at a time where he is a Top 5 player. The bar has been raised and then lowered by Cabrera and Trout respectively, now we wait and see what Bryce Harper commands.
#Angels would have preferred to go 7-8-9-10 years on Trout, but this is a decent compromise for them. At least the kid won't bolt in 2017. — Mike DiGiovanna (@MikeDiGiovanna) March 29, 2014
This is actually a very smart move my the Angels, who have been known to overspend and pay the price in the past. The Angels keep their best player in town for six more seasons and it cost them $6 million less than the Tigers gave their MVP. What do you think of Trout’s new deal?
