Tonight at 7:15 p.m. ET the No. 2 seed Michigan Wolverines will kick off the Friday Sweet 16 slate on CBS when they take on the No. 11 Tennessee Volunteers, who are aiming to match Dayton's feat of reaching the Elite Eight. Michigan star Glenn Robinson III has longtime ties to Vols coach Cuonzo Martin, who was a college roommate of Robinson's NBA father. "I'm happy for him and it will be fun playing against him," Martin said Thursday. "Of course, we'd like to get the win, but I'm happy to see where he's come, how far he's come as a basketball player. He's a great kid."
That's going to go out the window for a few hours tonight though, where Robinson will be trying to end Martin's season and vice versa. While Michigan's offense is one of the nation's best, they will be tested in a big way by Jordan McRae, who averaged 18.6 points per game this year, and big man Jarnell Stokes who averaged double-figure rebounds this season.
In three NCAA Tournament games he's put up three double-doubles-18 points, 13 rebounds vs. Iowa, 26 points, 14 rebounds vs. UMass, and 17 points 18 rebounds vs. Mercer. Without center Mitch McGary, whose ascendance helped Michigan reach last year's title game, they may not have an answer in the middle.
To counteract that interior presence, the Wolverines will probably have to shoot the lights out like they have all season. Tennessee's been pretty stingy against opposing 3-point shooters, holding them to 33 percent beyond the arc. They were also 17th in the nation in opponent points per game, so Michigan may just be on upset alert.
