Blade Runner Oscar Pistorius Facing Life in Prison for Murder of Girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day

Oscar Pistorius, the first double amputee Olympic and Paralympic competitor nicknamed the Blade Runner is facing a section six murder charge in South Africa, the most serious murder charge there is according to Yahoo! Sports. Pistorius shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp four times through his bathroom door on February 14th, but told the court that he believed Steenkamp was a burglar and that he felt vulnerable because he did not have his prosthetic legs on, according to a CBS.com report.

CNN.com reported that South African prosecutor Gerrie Nel told the court a different story. Nel said that Steenkamp was hiding in the bathroom after a shouting match with Pistorius. Evidence such as an overnight bag, her IPad, and the fact that she was in her nightwear when she was killed suggest she was sleeping over Pistorius' house.

The New York Daily News has reported a blood-spattered cricket bat may be a crucial and deciding piece of evidence in the case. In the Daily News story a source familiar with the case said that Steenkamp's skull was crushed, and that it is possible Pistorius had beaten her with the bat. In this report it was revealed that a spent 9-mm. cartridge was found on the bedroom floor. "The suspicion is that the first shot, in the bedroom, hit her in the hip. She then ran and locked herself in the toilet. She was doubled over because of the pain. He fired three more shots. She probably covered her head, which is why the bullet also went through her hand," an unnamed source familiar with the investigation is quoted as saying in the report.

Pistorius was born without fibula bones and had both of his legs amputated at 11 months old. He won gold medals in two events at the 2012 Summer Paralympics; he won the 400-meter race in a Paralympic record 46.68 seconds and the 4 x 100 meter race where he set a world record by running it in 41.78.  He won silver in the 200-meter race after setting yet another world record in the semifinal of that race, with a time of 21.3 seconds.

Steenkamp was 29 years old when she died. She was a model and the face of Avon in South Africa. She was also set to appear on Tropika Island of Treasure, a reality television show. The show aired on February 16 as scheduled.
