Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is considered one of the more charismatic owners in sports and has an opinion on almost everything. When asked about the NFL during a routine press conference Cuban made waves by predicting the end of the NFL is coming within the next 10 years.

"I think the NFL is 10 years away from an implosion. When pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered. And they're getting hoggy. When you try to take it too far, people turn the other way. I'm just telling you, when you got a good thing and you get greedy, it always, always, always, always, always turns against you.”

You heard that right, Mr. Cuban thinks when the rich get richer the league will buckle under its own greed until it falls as the countries top sport. Now the idea of a sport falling from grace isn't as farfetched as it sounds on paper. Not too long ago baseball was America’s pastime and the king of sports. Now the MLB is struggling to find it’s place in this new fast paced sports world. Cuban went on about the future of football and the greed that will destroy the NFL.

"They're trying to take over every night of TV. Initially, it'll be, 'Yeah, they're the biggest-rating thing that there is.' OK, Thursday, that's great, regardless of whether it impacts [the NBA] during that period when we cross over. Then if it gets Saturday, now you're impacting colleges. Now it's on four days a week... It's all football. At some point, the people get sick of it.”

Another point Cuban raises that makes sense. The ratings for Thursday Night Football aren’t what the NFL was hoping for, but that could be due to it being broadcasted on the NFL Network. This coming season with half the games moving to CBS could pay dividends.

Cuban has his opinion on the NFL and it is fundamentally sound from a business standpoint, but at this point in the NFL’s lifecycle the only major threat they face is the risk of head injuries. The greed of the league will not be the end of the league. As for basketball, maybe Mr. Cuban should talk about his own league that is looking into sponsored ads on jerseys and creates new jerseys for every occasion. Greed is in every major sports league.
