Michael Vick is off the board and the Panthers found the first replacement receiver of the offseason. The dog days of free agency are upon us and the few remaining potential stars are falling into place. Running back seems to be the last group to find homes and it begins when Knowshon Moreno finds a home. Updating the biggest names in free agency from the past week.
Cowboys sign DT Henry Melton (1 year; $2.5M guarantee): This deal is interesting because if Melton makes the Cowboys in 2015 the deal becomes a three-year, $24 million deal, and Melton gets the deal he was looking for. The “prove it” gets results again. The way the deal works makes it a great one. Melton is one that is hard to motivate and the possibility of $24 million is plenty motivation.

Panthers sign WR Jerricho Cotchery (5 years, $8.015M; $2.25M guaranteed): Im sure this isn't the big wide receiver signing the Panthers thought they would have. Cotchery was serviceable with the Steelers but nothing more. The Panthers have seven picks in the draft and thats not enough to fill their holes. I hope for their sake they sign another wide receiver. The gurenteed money is a lot of a 32 year old, but Cotchery is now the number one on the current roster.

Best & Worst Signings of FA Early Week Two
Jets sign QB Michael Vick (1 year, $5 million): Meh. The Jets signed an injury prone turnover machine that adds to the hype machine that is New York. The Jets get Vick at 34 and he has aged into a shell of himself. His scrambling is declining and he still isn't a pocket passer at all. The Jets do benefit from it being a one-year deal and even at this point Vick could be better than Geno Smith. The Jets didn’t add a mentor they added a competitor and nothing more.

Schaub to Oakland Good for Everyone
Raiders acquire QB Matt Schaub from Texans for 6th-round pick: The Raiders got a starting QB for 2014 while grooming whoever they draft. Schuab was a good QB at some point in the recent past, but a fresh start could be his ticket back. The Texans get something for a player they weren't keeping anyway so it works out. I like this deal for both teams, but the Raiders now have the best QB they have had since Rich Gannon.
Packers re-sign RB James Starks (2 years, $3.17M; $725K guaranteed): A good deal for a player that is a proven compliment to Eddie Lacy. Packers have a nice one-two punch after not have a slither of a run game for years.
