North Dakota State coach Saul Phillips become one of the 2014 NCAA Tournament's stars when his excitement at upsetting Oklahoma boiled over into joyous yells. His happy demeanor was a microcosm of why March Madness is such a popular event.
"You got to coach to your personality and I'm a happy guy. I am. I've been happy since birth. I just came out with a smile on my face," Phillips said. "I can't change that. I could try to be ornery and negative and that would be fake. I can't do that. In the very corporate, cold world of college basketball, that's just not my personality."
They stunned the Sooners, and now have a chance against an Aztecs team that has been bitten by double-digit seeds before. They were among the victims of then-No. 15 Florida Gulf Coast's run to the Elite Eight just last year.
"In my eyes it's like last year all over again," SDSU forward Winston Shepard said. "We beat a good team in the first round, had a tough game, and we are playing a team that not a lot of people have heard of."
That team not a lot of people have heard of is led by Taylor Braun, who leads the Bison in points per game (18.2), rebounds per game (5.5), and assists (3.9). On the flipside, the Bison need to be concerned with San Diego State guard Xavier Thames, who put up 16.8 ppg and 3.2 assists.
"Everything they do, I believe, starts going through him," Phillips said.
