Saint Louis has been knocking on the door of the Sweet 16 for nearly half a decade now, but head coach Jim Crews is saying he doesn't feel the pressure of those hopes. "I don't worry about it," Crews said. "It is extremely, extremely hard to get into the NCAA tournament. We're just going to try to do the best we can."
They barely made it here, squeaking by the N.C. State Wolfpack after a meltdown that was one of the Big Dance's more stunning developments thus far. Both teams struggled in their opener, but Crews believes that helps both teams and should also excite them.
"College basketball should be fun. It shouldn't be a burden of life in my opinion," Crews said. "We take it serious, but we're not going to take ourselves too serious. There's only one team that's really not disappointed when it all ends."
Louisville enters play as a favorite, but their coach Rick Pitino is worried about the Billikens' ability to disrupt. "Jim Crews is as good as it gets when you watch his team playing on film. Defensively they don't let you run your things. ... Offensively they get high percentage shots," Pitino said. "With one day preparation, Jim Crews type teams are nightmarish to go against."
That's why he'll be leaning on top playmaker Russ Smith to execute despite the tough challenge. "Russ makes us a better team when he passes more," Pitino said. "You know, we've got a lot of playmakers."
