San Diego State was embarrassed last year by Florida Gulf Coast, a No. 15 seed, and barely took any time off following that loss. "We started working out," sophomore Winston Shepard said. "Not too many guys took a break. I went back and worked out over the summer. My teammates were doing the exact same thing."

Four starters are gone from that team, but the Aztecs still managed to reach the Big Dance for a fifth consecutive season. One of the reasons they stayed afloat was transfer Xavier Thames, who is leading the team in scoring with 16.8 points per game this year.

Thames was one of six transfers to the team this year, an eyebrow raising number that head coach Steve Fisher won't apologize for.

"I think we'll continue to take transfers," Fisher said. "But we have turned a lot of transfers down who wanted to come because we didn't think they would be a good fit. You can't just take the highest-rated transfer on the market and say we're going to win. ... Nobody wants to take somebody else's problems."

New Mexico State is an unknown to most teams, but they have a very talented guard in junior Daniel Mullings who is tops on the team in points per game (16.8) and assists (3.5).
