Dallas Stars forward Rich Peverley is undergoing tests after collapsing on the team's bench in what was later described as a cardiac event during Monday night's game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, which was eventually postponed due to the incident.
Peverley, who collapsed during the first period of the game, is currently undergoing tests at UT Southwestern St. Paul Hospital to discover what caused the cardiac event, ESPN reports.
Stars general manager Jim Nill gave a statement Tuesday, saying that Peverley has been speaking with his friends and teammates and is "extremely grateful" for their support.
"The focus of all the testing and monitoring is being dedicated to finding the cause of the event and a long-term solution to rectify the problem," Nill said in the statement, according to ESPN. "We do not have any more specifics at this time."
ESPN reports that the Stars plan to hold a press conference on Wednesday alongside UT Southwestern doctors to update everyone on Peverley's condition.
Peverley skated to the bench on Wednesday night and ended up collapsing, delaying the game and leading to the NHL making a decision to cancel the remainder of the contest. It's unknown if or when the NHL will resume the game, as the Stars are in St. Louis tonight visiting the Blues at the Scottrade Center.
According to ESPN, Peverley's teammate Alex Chiasson was taken to the hospital Monday night after being shaken up by the incident. Chiasson will not play against the Blues.
"Alex Chiasson was taken to the hospital last night to be evaluated by team doctors," said Tom Holy, the Stars' senior director of communications, according to ESPN. "He was very shaken up after witnessing a very emotionally distressful situation and we thought it best for him to stay home. We expect him to be fine but didn't want him playing in a National Hockey League game tonight."
Peverley had a procedure in September to repair an irregular heartbeat, causing him to miss the preseason before returning to the ice on Oct. 5. The issue was diagnosed during Peverley's physical with the team prior to the season. Peverley missed a matchup with these same Blue Jackets last week due to an issue stemming from his irregular heartbeat.
Peverley, who was dealt to the Stars from the Boston Bruins prior to the season, has appeared in 62 games with the Stars and is tied for third on the team with 30 points off of seven goals and 23 assists.
