Tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET the embarrassingly futile Philadelphia 76ers (15-47) will head to the world's most famous arena, Madison Square Garden, to take on the New York Knicks (24-40), who are on a three-game winning streak. The Knicks have won three straight games, and are beginning to show signs of the team many expected they'd be from the season's outset. "You can see something different over the last couple of games," leading scorer Carmelo Anthony said. "It seems like everyone has a sense of urgency right now. We're playing for something. We control our own destiny. We want to win as many games as we can down the stretch."
The 76ers, on the other hand, appear to be tanking as hard as possible regardless of what the players and front office say. They've lost 16 straight games, and rookie point guard Michael Carter-Williams, a candidate for Rookie of the Year, missed 11-of-13 shots on Saturday vs. the Utah Jazz.
"I'm going to give that group the benefit of the doubt," said coach Brett Brown of his badly struggling team. "We're going to see this thing through."
They'll need a great effort tonight with the Knicks apparently zoned in on making the postseason. Missing the playoffs would be an unmitigated disaster, since they don't have their first round pick. "There's no room for error," head coach Mike Woodson said. "We have to play each possession like it's our last possession. The mental approach is a little different now. It's been a tough season for all of us. Now, they're playing for something."
Besides Anthony, another name to watch for the home team is Amar'e Stoudemire, averaging 16.8 points per game over New York's last four contests.
