Rashard Mendenhall is expected to announce his NFL retirement sometime this week, according to ESPN.
Just 26-years-old, Mendenhall has played six NFL seasons after being drafted in the first-round of the 2008 draft by Pittsburgh. More recently, Mendenhall has played for the Arizona Cardinals and has rushed for 4,236 yards and 39 touchdowns over his career.
Mendenhall hinted at his pending decision as far back as late February when he wrote in a column for the Huffington Post "as I write this today, is the day that the journey is over and I am fully at peace. Eagerly looking to a new way, which lies ahead."
At the end of the 2013 season, ESPN reports Mendenhall told Cardinals coach Bruce Arians he now wants to write books and do different things. Mendenhall rushed for 687 yards and scored eight touchdowns last season.
Mendenhall stared at the University of Illinois from 2005 to 2008, where he rushed for 2,539 yards and 22 touchdowns. He added 59 catches for 564 yards and five scores.
Mendenhall's best NFL season came with the Steelers in 2010 when he rushed for 1,273 yards and 13 touchdowns.
