Bucking a sore back, Tiger Woods shot a 6-under-par 66 on Saturday in the third round of the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship at Trump International Doral, putting the world number one within striking distance of leader Patrick Reed.

"I was pretty sore last night, but my therapists are doing a fantastic job of getting me out here and playing," Woods told USA Today, adding he was thinking about his back all throughout the round.

Playing behind the leaders at the start of the day, Woods shot his lowest round this season moving him into a tie for fourth place with Jamie Donaldson.

The world number one started with birdies on two of his first three holes. He then scored four more birdies in the next eight holes.

"I held it together (Friday), which was a long day, a long, tough day, and that gave me a chance today," he added.

Woods' strong play put him in contention for a tournament title for the first time this season, which has not been his best in his checkered career. He missed the 54-hole cut in the Farmers Insurance Open, ended 41st in the Dubai Desert Classic and withdrew in the final round of the Honda Classic just last week.

Current leader Reed has a two-shot lead over Jason Dufner and Hunter Mahan.

Said Reed: "The main thing with this kind of golf course is with how firm and fast and tough it's playing, you have to stay patient. And I felt like I stuck to my game plan all day and stayed real patient and felt like I got a lot out of my round. I feel like I left some shots out there but I feel comfortable going into (Sunday) especially with the lead and hopefully go do the same thing."
