The cost-cutting moves of the New Orleans Saints continue, with the Associated Press reporting that Darren Sproles will be released in case they are unable to trade the 30-year-old running back.

The AP source spoke on condition of anonymity since the team's decision has not been publicly announced, per Yahoo! Sports. If the report is true, then Sproles will be the latest casualty of the team's austerity moves following the release of receiver Lance Moore on Friday.

Sproles came to New Orleans as a free agent three years ago and set a league mark for total yards in a season with 2,696.

Sproles, who also dabbles as a receiver and return specialist, is set to earn $3.4 million this coming season while Moore was to earn $3.1 million. By cutting the two players who were part of the team's 2009 Super Bowl-winning squad, the Saints have more cap room under the salary cap as they attempt to extend the contract of free agent Jimmy Graham.

Moore's release was confirmed by the player himself who tweeted: "''Thank you New Orleans for an amazing nine years. Who Dat Nation, the best on earth!!!''

Saints GM Mickey Loomis said on Moore's release: ''Lance was very important to our productivity on offense and our success as a team overall. ... You couldn't ask for more from Lance both on and off the field and we wish him the best of luck.''

Other than Moore and Sproles, the Saints have also waived safety Roman Harper, defensive end Will Smith and cornerback Jabari Greer who all started on the franchise's 2009 championship winning team. The team also announced that they will not re-sign linebacker Jonathan Vilma who has had numerous knee injuries in the past few years.
