The MLB offseason can be summed up in very few words: Puig, Trout, replay and home plate. Not even a month into spring training we are given a gift from the baseball gods, a play that involved all four.

Fantasy: American League Sleepers

The play in question was in the bottom of the first as Mike Trout belted a pitch from former teammate Dan Haren in the direction of none other then Yasiel Puig. Puig treated this particular play, not like a meaningless spring game but, as the dig days of October by laying out and almost making the incredible play.

Puig an accident waiting to happen?

The fun doesn't stop there as Puig ran down the missed catch as Trout was attempting to stretch the play into an inside-the-park-home run. Puig hit the cutoff man which allowed for there to be a play at the plate. Trout was called out by inches which prompted manager Mike Scioscia to “throw the challenge flag”. Not only did we get a look at home plate instant replay and the new home plate rules, but it involved two of the leagues youngest and brightest stars. Trout was confirmed to be out on a call that could have gone either way, but this is the future of baseball.

Our first candidate for play of the year and it comes in a meaningless spring training game. If this is any indicator of the season to come then we are in store for a quite the treat, especially from these two stars.
