Steve Elkington Michael Sam Tweet [PHOTO]: Golfer tweets Sam is 'Leading the handbag throw at the NFL combine'

PGA golfer Steve Elkington took to Twitter on Tuesday in an attempt to be funny while making light of former Missouri defensive lineman Michael Sam coming out as gay and appearing at the NFL combine in the form of a bad joke.

Elkington sent out a tweet that poked fun at Sam's sexual orientation amid reports that he's had an unimpressive run at the NFL combine thus far.

"ESPN reporting Michael Sam is leading the handbag throw at NFL combine.... No one else expected to throw today," Elkington tweeted Tuesday.

Sam, who is likely to get drafted in this year's NFL Draft in May, revealed that he was gay recently after completing his college football career. If Sam is indeed brought into the NFL after the draft, he would be the first openly gay athlete to compete in the NFL.

Sam coming out has resulted in a range of reactions throughout the league, media and fans of the game, with a lot of people lauding him for his courage and believing that it doesn't make a difference what his sexual preferences are as long as he takes the field and is highly skilled, while others have slammed him and even said the NFL "isn't ready" for a gay player.

Regardless of anyone's take on the matter, it's clear that Elkington's poorly formed joke was in bad taste and was meant to poke fun of Sam's sexual orientation, not his performance at the NFL combine.

Sam played four years in Missouri and recorded 111 tackles, 18.5 sacks and two interceptions during his time with the team.

It remains to be seen if he'll be drafted, but if Elkington's poor joke is any indication, perhaps it's some of the members of the media that aren't ready for a gay athlete, not the NFL.
