Floyd Mayweather Jr. is still keeping fight fans in painful suspense regarding his opponent for May 3rd, despite every possible sign pointing to Amir Khan.
The criticisms of Khan as a choice are numerous. The British fighter has a suspect chin, evidenced by knockout losses to Breidis Prescott and Danny Garcia, a lack of landmark victories, and the fact that he has never fought above 140 lbs. in his career, while Mayweather has vanquished top fighters at 154 lbs.
Recently on social media Mayweather asked fans to pick his next opponent, with the options being Khan or Marcos Maidana. "I'm going to let the fans vote. Tell me who I should fight next. Khan or Maidana?" Mayweather posted. The fans have spoken apparently, with 60 percent of them choosing Khan.
At the moment Maidana is the hotter name of the two, having upset hotshot prospect Adrien Broner in December. Broner is closely related to Mayweather, referring to Floyd as his "big bro," and some have billed a potential Mayweather-Maidana clash as a vengeance bout.
Of the two potential opponents Maidana is also by far the harder puncher, and recognized as one of the most powerful sluggers pound-for-pound in the sport. Team Khan has downplayed Maidana's candidacy by essentially saying he's more of the same type of opponent "Money" has feasted on for years now.
Khan claims that even though his resume is somewhat lacking, his skill set could be kryptonite for Mayweather's vaunted defense. I'm the total opposite of Canelo, Victor Ortiz or [Robert Guerrero]. What I bring is something he hasn't faced in a long time. It will be a skills match. It will be a boxing match," Khan said.
Respected trainer and noted Mayweather antagonist Freddie Roach also believes Khan possesses the tools to hand "Money" his first loss.
"That's not an easy fight. I've always said Amir has the right style to beat Floyd if he fights correctly and doesn't stay in the pocket too long," Roach said. "I always thought he could beat him with his speed. I think he's faster than Mayweather and that's what it takes to beat him. Floyd might have his hands full on the night."
