Following the success of the Super Bowl in the New York/New Jersey area showing that the big game could be played in a cold-weather area, the mayor of Philadelphia has thrown his hat in the ring in hopes of landing a Super Bowl in his city.
According to ESPN, Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter believes that a Super Bowl in the City of Brotherly Love could surpass the success of Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. that saw the Seattle Seahawks topple the Denver Broncos 43-8.
"Heck, yeah, we want it," Nutter told reporters, according to NJ.com. "And we can do it better than anyone else."
Nutter isn't the only one on board for a Philadelphia Super Bowl, as Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said he wanted the big game to be hosted at Lincoln Financial Field following the recent $125 million stadium upgrade, ESPN reports.
Nutter said he believed it would be great for Philadelphia's economy and national reputation.
"It would provide a substantial economic benefit to the city and its growing hospitality sector," Nutter said, according to ESPN. "It would mean an international focus on a city that is emerging as a desired destination for international visitors. And it would offer us the opportunity to market Philadelphia to a national audience."
Nutter also said he believed that Philadelphia could do it better than anyone else.
"When it comes to doing big events and rolling out the red carpet, no city does it any better than the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection," he said per ESPN.
According to ESPN, officials in New England, Denver and Minnesota have all expressed interest in bringing the Super Bowl to their respective cities, but NFL commissioner Roger Goodell stopped short last week before saying that Super Bowl XLVIII would be the first of many cold weather games, as there appears to be some trepidation by the league in regards to doing another one.
Goodell said that hotel availability and "making sure we do these things the right way" were reasons behind choosing Super Bowl sites.
If Philadelphia is to land a Super Bowl, it would have to wait until 2019 as the next three Super Bowl sites have been announced already and the 2018 finalists have been revealed as well, with Minnesota being a cold-weather finalist to land the game.
