January 1st is an annual hotbed for NCAA bowl games, and this year's slate kicks off at 12:00 p.m. ET on ESPN2 when the Nebraska Cornhuskers (8-4, 5-3 Big Ten) face off with the Georgia Bulldogs (8-4, 5-3 SEC) in the Gator Bowl. The Bulldogs are facing Nebraska for the second straight year in a bowl game; last season they lit up the Huskers 45-31 in the Capital One Bowl. Aaron Murray passed for 427 yards in that matchup, but will be unavailable this go-round after tearing his ACL in November.

Junior Hutson Mason is filling in for Murray, and seems ready for the New Year's Day spotlight.

I'm very grateful for the opportunity. Nebraska is a very good team. It's going to be a challenge," Mason said. "They're a team that's a lot like us. They've been hit by the injury bug, they're 8-4, we're 8-4. And if you look at their games, one thing I've noticed is that they were one drive, one play from being 9-3, being in a bigger bowl, or playing in a conference championship just like us."

Nebraska will be without their own star quarterback Taylor Martinez, who managed to throw for 667 yards and 10 touchdowns this season despite playing in just four games.

"He will be out for the game -- I should say not 100 percent, but it looks like he will be out for the game," coach Bo Pelini said. "I think it is hard, this whole season has been hard on him and obviously it is not ideal, and not the way you want to see him go out. I feel for him, it has been a difficult deal, but he is not 100 percent yet."
