Hornets: Kemba Walker Returns to Charlotte in New Role After Announcing Retirement

Kemba Walker will return to the Charlotte Hornets one day after officially announcing his retirement from professional basketball.

The 34-year-old will join the team's coaching staff under new head coach Charles Lee.

Walker will specifically have the role of player enhancement coach, marking his return to the franchise since he departed as a player in 2019.

Before retiring, Walker recently spent the 2023-24 season in Europe with AS Monaco, where he won the LNB Elite French league title in his lone season overseas.

On Wednesday, July 3, the Hornets also revealed the rest of their coaching staff, which includes multiple assistants and other behind-the-scenes members such as several video coordinators and player development coaches.

Kemba Walker is a Hornets franchise legend

Drafted by the team with the ninth overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft when they were then known as the Charlotte Bobcats, Walker is a four-time NBA All-Star, earning consecutive selections from 2017 to 2020. 

Walker is the franchise's all-time leader in points, field goals, 3-pointers, free throws, and minutes played. Additionally, he ranks second in team history in assists, third in steals, and third in games played. 

A 2019 All-NBA Third Team member and a two-time winner of the NBA Sportsmanship Award in 2017 and 2018, Walker will transition to a coaching career after recently announcing his retirement last Tuesday, July 2.
