The quarterback is arguably the most important offensive position in football and is definitely the most lucrative in the NFL.

With several hundred million dollars poured into quarterbacks around the league, NFL owners are reportedly in talks on a potential separate salary cap dedicated solely to signal-callers, as per league insider Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network.

"There has certainly been discussion within the league among certain owners about even the idea of a quarterback cap, that at some point you don't want quarterback numbers to go over a certain percentage of your salary cap," the journalist said during a guest appearance at "The Rich Eisen Show."

Aside from usually being the highest-paid players on their teams, quarterbacks are also likely the most popular among fans.

However, Pelissero mentioned that the proposed salary cap for quarterbacks is not gaining momentum.

"To my knowledge, that hasn't really gained traction, in part because so many teams have paid their quarterbacks," Pelissero added.

Biggest NFL contracts are all for quarterbacks

The top 12 biggest contracts in NFL history belong to quarterbacks, led by reigning Super Bowl MVP and Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes' 10-year, $450 million deal.

Cincinnati Bengals' Joe Burrow and Jacksonville Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence are tied for second place with five-year, $275 million contracts.

San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa holds the largest NFL contract ever for a non-quarterback, signing a five-year deal worth $170 million in 2023. This is only the 13th-largest deal in NFL history.
