The 2024 NBA Finals are set, with the Dallas Mavericks and Boston Celtics facing off on basketball's biggest stage this year.
Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young seemed excited about a particular storyline in the championship round.
Young reacted by posting a popcorn emoji while quoting a video featuring clips of Boston fans being hostile towards now Mavericks star Kyrie Irving when he was with the Brooklyn Nets on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.
Irving previously played for the Boston Celtics for two seasons, arriving via trade in 2017, but he left for the Brooklyn Nets in 2019 as a free agent.
Since then, the point guard hasn't had a smooth relationship with the Celtics, with Boston fans consistently jeering him. Irving responded by stomping on the iconic Celtics leprechaun logo on their home floor during a playoff series in 2021.
Kyrie Irving opens up on facing former team Boston Celtics
Meanwhile, Irving opened up about facing his former team in the Finals moments after Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals on Thursday, May 30.
The eight-time NBA All-Star admitted that he wasn't in the best place mentally during his tenure with the Celtics due to off-court issues. However, he now feels he has moved past those challenges and expressed respect for the current Celtics team.
"I'm ready to go back into Boston and have fun with my teammates. I know we're going to be locked in and we're going against a great Boston team that has earned their way to the NBA Finals. I see them as a formidable opponent, an honest opponent, and we're going to see the best team win," the 32-year-old said.
