New Jersey Devils forward Ryane Clowe is back on the ice and practicing for the first time since sustaining a concussion on October 13th. Clowe signed a five-year, $24.25 million deal this offseason, and there is pressure for him to return.
One man familiar with returning from bad concussions is Penguins star Sidney Crosby, who has apparently reached out to Clowe to offer some advice. "Sid said to 'Tell Clowey to give me a call, I've love to talk to him about it,'" Clowe said. "I know Sid a little bit. I haven't (called) yet just because I just started to come back and I feel good, but I might anyway just to talk to him."
According to reports Crosby sent word through the San Jose Sharks' equipment manager Mike Aldrich; Clowe spent more than seven seasons with the Sharks to begin his career.
Clowe said he may look to receive input from another NHL star, Chris Pronger, who has famously battled head injuries.
"I got Pronger's number off (former Flyers forward) Jody Shelley, who is a good buddy of mine, and Prongs said to call anytime," Clowe said. "Guys are great like that. This was all within the last week. I just started to practice, feel good, skate, so I was like, 'If I hit a low again, I might call.' I might anyway because I've had a few of these."
The Devils are eagerly awaiting his return, and Clowe said he's beginning to feel more comfortable on the ice. "I feel really good," he said. "I handled the puck, even the stuff in the corners as far as protecting the puck and all that. That's what you kind of worry about the most if you're going to be hesitant.
"It's hard to tell when you're on the ice. You're out there sweating. Your adrenalin is up, and then you might get home that night and it hits you like a ton of bricks and you might feel awful. It's really weird, but the last week or so I haven't had that, so hopefully everything goes well."
