The Cleveland Cavaliers will be facing a lot of critical decisions this offseason.

The team is closely monitoring the future of star Donovan Mitchell, who has yet to sign an extension despite having two years remaining on his contract. Only the 2024-25 season is guaranteed, and the 2025-26 season is a player option.

On the other hand, the Cavs' other All-Star guard, Darius Garland, may seek to play elsewhere if Mitchell signs a long-term deal with the Cavs, according to a report by Shams Charania, Joe Vardon, and Jason Lloyd of The Athletic.

Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, Mitchell's agent, reportedly discussed finding a new team with the Cavs front office if Mitchell's extension is granted.

As a result of this development, executives around the league prepare their strategies for either scenario of whom Cleveland would choose to keep.

Darius Garland's production declined upon Donovan Mitchell's arrival

Garland had a breakout year in 2021-22, where he was named an All-Star and averaged 21.7 points, 8.6 assists, and 3.3 rebounds.

However, since the arrival of Mitchell in Cleveland in the summer of 2022, the Vanderbilt product's production has declined in the next two seasons.

Garland's numbers are down to 18.0 points, 6.5 assists, and 2.7 rebounds in 2023-24, despite having roughly the same playing time he had during his All-Star season.
