Current FC Barcelona and former Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski have expressed his sentiments regarding the 2020 Ballon d'Or award.

During the pandemic-laden year, the Polish international was widely regarded as the best player in the world, leading Bayern Munch to their second European continental treble in club history.

However, France Football, the organization responsible for the Ballon d'Or award, decided to cancel that year's award due to the disruptions caused by COVID-19.

"Of course I would like to receive the Ballon d'Or award one day. It's not that I'm angry or sad because this trophy is still missing. But my feeling is that it would have been my turn in one of the two years. In 2020 and 2021 I had the best years of my career," the 35-year-old said in German on Sport Bild.

Lewandowski added that he would be open to receiving a delayed award for his stellar 2020 calendar year.

"I've heard there are rumors that the 2020 Ballon d'Or could still be awarded belatedly. If I were to receive the 2020 Ballon d'Or four years later, I would certainly not be offended. It would be a big honor and I would accept the award," he stated.

Lewandowski continued his outstanding form throughout the calendar year of 2021.

Although the Ballon d'Or resumed awarding the prize that year, in a closely contested vote, Lionel Messi was ultimately bestowed the honor for 2021.

Nevertheless, Lewandowski believes that Messi deserved to win the award that year despite doubts by some observers.
