Canelo Alvarez is still waiting for a decision from Miguel Cotto before announcing an opponent for March 8th, and the list of Plan B options is growing. Cotto remains Alvarez's top priority, as he said last week the two fighters "need each other."
Cotto is rumored to have a $15 million offer to chase a middleweight strap against Sergio Martinez though, and has a longer-standing relationship with Bob Arum and Top Rank, which promotes its fights on HBO. In the event that Cotto turns Alvarez down, a lengthy crew of fighters is vying for an opportunity to take on Canelo.
Erislandy Lara out of Cuba has been the noisiest, mocking the Mexican superstar on Twitter by calling him "Canela," as well as referring to him as a "baby" who has been protected throughout his career from difficult opponents. Lara also defeated Austin Trout on December 7th in sound fashion; Trout gave Alvarez plenty of trouble.
Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer thinks that another option might make for better television though--Alfredo Angulo. He lost by TKO to Lara in June of this year, but Schaefer thinks his style is more entertaining than Lara's. Reading between the lines, beating an action fighter such as Angulo will restore Alvarez's luster more quickly.
"From the point of view of a promoter, I can say I'd prefer to see Alfredo Angulo more than the others from the point of view of his style. I think Angulo would be a great fight, people do not like chess matches," Schaefer said.
Canelo's team disagrees with Schaefer however, because Angulo just lost to Lara. Instead, they prefer Carlos Molina as the next in line since he holds a title. "We want to go forward, and Angulo is coming off a knockout loss," Canelo's manager/trainer Eddy Reynoso said.
"Lara is a better option but the ideal opponent is the champion Molina. He has all of the merits and people saw him on pay-per-view in September, and that is something that we would be looking for."
