British boxer Amir Khan is doing everything he can to keep in the media spotlight as he angles for a May fight with pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. It's been widely speculated since October that he will be next in line to face "Money," and that talk grew when he pulled out of his fight with Devon Alexander set for December 7th.
In fact, Khan was the commentator for that card at Barlcays Center in Brooklyn, where he was the announcer for Alexander's loss to up-and-coming fighter Shawn Porter. Khan has stated numerous times that he's ready to fight Floyd, saying prior to last Saturday's card that he'd "grab the fight with both hands."
The knock on Khan is that he has a suspect chin and hasn't earned the right for such a major payday. Khan is adamant, though, that his chin issues will disappear with the move to full-fledged welterweight.
Khan says he's naturally much bigger than the 140-lb. weight class he's been fighting in, and that he has been up to 13 lbs. over the limit the day before a fight. The battle to lose all that weight by weigh-in has been sapping him of his strength, and causing him to be weakened in the ring.
He also said that the increased weight will make him unstoppable, since he "can't be touched" in terms of skill. He mentioned Danny Garcia, and claimed that he might've stopped Garcia last year in another two rounds had he not been jacked up by a left hook that knocked him out.
"I make my mistakes, and I learn from them. You'll see a new Amir Khan now," Khan said. "Especially at this weight, 147. I bet I'm bigger than Floyd Mayweather. If you look at me, and look at him I'm bigger, but I was making 140."
Bringing up Garcia's name, though, might set up an interesting scenario. If Mayweather shocks the world and decides the time is right to face Manny Pacquiao, Garcia may be the right name at the right time for Khan. Both are moving up to welterweight, and the winner would almost assuredly be next in line for Mayweather in September.
