The formidable San Francisco 49ers are set to clash with the resurgent Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday, January 28, at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

San Francisco is entering the NFC Championship Game with momentum after a thrilling 24-21 victory over rivals the Green Bay Packers in the Divisional Round.

The game saw a late go-ahead touchdown by star running back Christian McCaffrey, securing the lead for good against a Green Bay team perceived as relatively inferior.

Given their vulnerable performance against the Packers, it's not far-fetched to consider the possibility of the Niners facing elimination against the Lions, particularly considering certain factors that could amplify the challenge.

On the other hand, the Lions clinched an inspiring 31-23 victory in their Divisional Round matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They managed to pull away in the fourth quarter after a closely contested game all evening.

Momentum is on their side ahead of a chance to go to the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history.

3 Problems that could spell trouble for San Francisco 49ers vs. Detroit Lions

1. Lions' passing defense

The Lions have showcased an impressive pass defense during critical moments, holding the best passer rating allowed in close and late situations since the 2022 season, registering at just 47.8, which is the best performance in the league.

The Lions' key approach is to keep the game tightly contested throughout to gain an advantage. Additionally, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has struggled in late and close games, holding a passer rating of only 75.5 since the 2022 season, ranking as the 10th-worst among Qualified Quarterbacks.

The Lions' Divisional Round victory over the Buccaneers highlighted their ability to excel in such scenarios, with linebacker Derrick Barnes intercepting Tampa Bay quarterback Baker Mayfield's pass in their final drive to secure the game.

2. Deebo Samuel's health

49ers standout wide receiver Deebo Samuel suffered a shoulder injury during their Divisional Round game against the Packers last Saturday, January 20, creating uncertainty about his availability for the upcoming match.

Even if the 28-year-old manages to take the field, the injury may impact his effectiveness. Samuel, who played only nine snaps before exiting the Divisional Round game, was restricted during team practice on Wednesday, January 24.

Notably, the 49ers faced defeat in all three games during the regular season when Samuel was inactive, which was also due to a shoulder injury.

4. 49ers' special teams

While the 49ers have excelled as a powerhouse this season, clinching the best record in the NFC, their weak spot lies in inconsistent special teams play, especially in kick coverage and field goal attempts.

The overall performance of the 49ers' special teams unit ranks 25th in the league, way below for a team that is elite in other areas of the game.
