Canelo Alvarez plans on fighting three times in 2014, following a disheartening defeat at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September. Golden Boy Promotions, which represents Alvarez has offered $10 million to Miguel Cotto to be Canelo's opponent in March, but Cotto's taking his sweet time in deciding whether to accept or face middleweight Sergio Martinez.

Perhaps the waiting game is intended to make Golden Boy prove how badly they want him. Alvarez made comments recently that might display a bit of desperation. "I think me and Cotto, both of us, we need each other," Alvarez said.

"No one can say who needs who more. It would be an interesting fight for him, for me and the people. I am 23, I have a long career and you have to move forward. The fight with Mayweather will serve me as a great experience when I come to win."

Cotto has definitely expressed an interest in taking on Canelo, but has been rumored to be offered $15 million from Top Rank to face Martinez. That offer has not yet been confirmed, however. In addition, the Martinez fight has long intrigued Cotto, as it offers an opportunity for him to become the first Puerto Rican-born fighter to win belts in four weight classes.

If Cotto decides to fight Martinez, Alvarez will be left with some interesting choices for hardcore fans that might fail to capture the imagination of casual observers. One name that pops up is Carlos Molina the IFB 154-lb. champion, but Erislandy Lara may have moved ahead of him as a Plan B to replace Cotto.

Lara knocked down Austin Trout Saturday night en route to a unanimous decision victory; previously Trout had given Canelo fits and nearly defeated him prior to the Mayweather matchup. Lara also had choice words for Alvarez, telling media members "Golden Boy has done a great job promoting him, and that's why he's gotten as far as he's gotten, but I feel that he's a baby, and that's all that he is."
